Korean Film

For some couple of weeks, I've been hooked by watching Korean Films.  I didn't know we have Korean DVDs at home (and hey! its original).  When I finished the series of My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (2010), I got attracted to Shin Min- Ah's beauty.  Upon browsing those DVD's at home, I found one of her movie years ago!  I was so intrigued by the film then I decided to watch those old Korean films.  Here are some:

Madeleine 마들렌 (2003)
(Romantic Comedy)
 Directed by Park Gwang-choon
Starring Jo In-Seong and Shin Min Ah


Ji-suk is a Korean Language & Literature major who dreams of becoming a writer. He starts delivering newspapers part-time. He goes to a hair salon to cut his long hair. A charming woman calls him by name. She is none other than Hee-jin, his junior high classmate. Dreaming of becoming a hair designer, Hee-jin is a senior hair designer at the salon despite her young age. Ji-suk is drawn to the dignified beauty. Hee-jin is also drawn to the untainted pureness of Ji-suk. Their paths cross by chance a few more times and the two grow closer. Finally, Hee-jin suggests a 'one month romance.' "Neither one of us can say 'Let's break up' before the month is up! After a month, we part ways grandly! What do you think? Fun, huh?" Ji-suk is caught off guard. Seeing this, Hee-jin smiles at him sweetly.

Ji-suk who ponders over everything seriously. Hee-jin who is filled with playfulness and is cheerful. They have 0% in common but together, they learn of a new world unfamiliar to them. Their romance is more splendid than they expected. But one day, Ji-suk's first love, Sung-hae, shows up. Majoring in film, Sung-hae is the lead singer of a band and very cool. Hee-jin gets jealous over Sung-hae and starts to fight with Ji-suk. It is the first time they argue since their month of romance began. And to make things worse, Hee-jin is faced with an enormous decision.




Tidal Wave (Haeundae) (2009)

Located on the southeast tip of the Korean peninsula is the international city of Busan. A popular vacation spot on the East Sea coast, Haeundae draws one million visitors to its beaches every year. Man-sik, a native of Haeundae, lost a co-worker to a tsunami on a deep-sea fishing trip four years ago. He has never returned to sea ever since. He now leads a simple life running a small seafood restaurant and is preparing to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Yeon-hee. Man-sik’s brother Hyung-sik works as a coast guard. One day, he rescues a female college student from Seoul who promptly, comes on to him aggressively. While these everyday domestic affairs unfold, geologist Kim Hwi, an expert on tsunami research, discovers the East Sea is showing signs of activity similar to the Indian Ocean at the time of the 2004 tsunami. Despite his warnings, the Disaster Prevention Agency affirms that Korea is in no harm of being hit. When he discovers a mega-tsunami is headed straight for the Korean peninsula, he quickly heads down to Haeundae. There he meets up with his ex-wife, who is organizing a cultural event, for the first time in seven years. He also sees his young daughter who is unaware that he is her father. Eventually, Kim gets a call about a deadly oncoming wave, with only ten minutes to spare! While the vacationers and citizens of Busan are enjoying a peaceful, hot summer day, a mega-tsunami is headed straight for Haeundae at 500 miles per hour.



How To Keep My Love (2004)
(Romantic Comedy)

Starring Kim Sang Kyeong and Kim Jeong Eun


Hyun-ju is a 29-year-old woman who believes that she has nothing to show for herself, except a successful relationship with her boyfriend. One day, her boyfriend So-hoon, who is sweet and gentle, goes to a department store to shop for her and ends up stuck in a broken elevator with the famous, gorgeous movie star Da-young, who is soon attracted to him for his easygoing and down-to-earth personality.

The Classic (2002)
(Drama-Melodrama-Romance)
Directed by Kwak Jae Yong
Starring Son Ye Jin (Ji Hae / Joo Hee), Jo Seung Woo (Joon Ah), Jo In Seong (Sang Min) Lee Ki Woo (Tae Soo), and Lee Soo In (Soo Kyoung)

Synopsis:
Ji-hae and Soo-kyoung are friends attending the same university and both have a crush on Sang-min who is in their drama club. The more clamorous and outgoing of the two, Soo-kyoung, asks Ji-hae to do her a favor - write a love letter to Sang-min. Ji-hae pours out her own feelings for him on paper, but sadly in her friend's name. Touched by the letter, Sang-min is attracted to Soo-kyoung, and Ji-hae, feeling uncomfortable and even guilty, tries to avoid him. And yet by coincidence or by fate she keeps running into him.

Ji-hae has lived alone with her mom since her childhood, when her dad unexpectedly passed away. Her mom is now on a trip abroad, and to wile away her solitude she starts cleaning the attic. There Ji-hae finds a secret box, in which her mom kept the memorabilia of her first love story of some decades past.

Summer in 1968...
Joon-ha is visiting his uncle's home in the countryside during his summer vacation. There he meets Joo-hee and falls in love at first sight. One day, the lovely Joo-hee secretly asks Joon-ha to escort her to a haunted house in the village. Happy and excited to be at her service, Joon-ha meets her at their promised spot. But in an unexpected storm, the two lose their boat and barely manage to return home at a very late hour. Joo-hee gets into big trouble for this incident and is sent back to Seoul. Having parted with Joo-hee without a word of farewell, Joon-ha spends the rest of the summer heavy-hearted.

With summer vacation being over Joon-ha also returns to Seoul. At school, his classmate Tae-su asks him to write a love letter to send to a girl. And who would it be but Joo-hee, Joon-ha's dream girl. Unable to confess his own summer love story, Joon-ha reluctantly complies with his friend's request.


Among those 4 films I've watched, I cried the most at the 2nd and last film mentioned TT.TT

Beyond the Schedule

I may not know everything on how Korean students manage their time in a day. They may also have different time management. With my student’s case, we were discussing about TIME, how to tell time, etc. In our lesson plan, we have to discuss one unit within 2 weeks! And my student and I meet twice a week so there’s a lot of stretching in the lesson, a lot more activities, etc. Good thing, this student of mine was already “nice” and “kind” compared to our previous meetings. He isa 13 year old middle school boy but his comprehension in English needs more improvement. Anyhow, here is the schedule of Ronaldo (Kyoung Rul Kim).
